Flat iron.....

I dunno why, but my flat iron was really calling my name tonite. I wanted to wait until I was a year in, but thought I'd just try it out.

Let me just say, I'm not even halfway thru and I now remember why i cut it in the first place. My arms hurt and I was very bored.

A few notes: definitely should have bothered to detangle beforehand. My ends are a bit knotty. Next time, i will try washing and blow drying too before I attempt this again. The top half is pretty smooth, but the ends are looking rather frayed. The "curls" settled at the bottom where I was holding it straight so the heat just glided over them.

I used grapeseed oil as a protectant, because I didn't have anything else.

I won't say this was a fail, just incomplete since I didn't even finish. I'll try it again in a few days. Maybe. I'll put some rollers in for the finish. My hair still, obviously is not at the length I want so maybe I won't bother with it for a few months.

I may try twisting it tonite though after I wash my hair. I do need to practice flat twisting.

..............

Nah. Wash and go, you are my friend lol

Twist out 2

Ok, I flat twisted my hair last night. My results were less than stellar. I wore it though, all day. I didn't use any product when I twisted it, but I did rub a little of the curling souffle over it after it was loose to help with some of the frizz.

I have a party to go to tomorrow. I dunno if I should attempt this again or just bare the twa..  my arms were hurting last night and its not long enough in the back. I dunno if its worth fooling with again

Style attempts

Ok, I've just attempted to flat twist my hair since my big chop. The top I actually had no issues with, but the back was still a little too short. If I were more patient, I could probably do some tiny two-strand twists, but chunky is fastest.

After my experience with the Shea moisture on my two strand twists a couple blog entries ago, I didn't use anything on my hair. Just my suave naturals everlasting sunshine (my new leave in conditioner).

Speaking of suave naturals. I'm considering bringing some cones back into my "regimen", which right now consists of cowashing then adding a bit of gel. I dunno though. The "no poo" thing is going pretty well. My moisture level is pretty good, breakage isn't a huge problem and neither are knots.

Perhaps if I change it to low poo. Shampooing once a month. I can't not wet my hair everyday. I tried it for a week... oh, update to that week challenge in the next blog.

Might be next weeks challenge: Using cones

First twist out since Big Chop

What a disaster! I have since put a headband on my head, but this is definitely a wash out situation.

I just wanted to try styling my hair. I was getting bored with current fro and was remembering my big curly fros from when I was transitioning. "This will be nice", I thought naively... I did this number on dry hair (I'm on a new week challenge of not drenching my hair every day). I just misted it with water and suave naturals everlasting sunshine (my new staple) then tried sealing with Shea moisture curling souffle..

Granted, my hair felt smoother, softer and moisturized, it also (still) feels like a sticky mess. I feel like I have less definition than when I let it dry loose. I will say, there were hardly any knots while taking the twists out.

In any case, this style is going on the back burner. For a while. I need more length for this to do and look like what I want. Also, definitely using less, if any, of the curling souffle. My hair literally feels like I poured pancake syrup over it.  Next time I wash, I may attempt a flat twist. Gonna have to look up kinkycoilycurlyme's youtube videos.

11pm..

I had a date. Amazed? I am lol.

I don't talk much about dating or relationships because, in my case, there isn't much to say. I'm still dealing with "baby daddy drama" BS and really haven't met anyone worth talking about. There is one guy I really like, but due to his personal and emotional issues right now, I've been thrown under the friend bus. Every time he says "I'm glad I have a friend like you", that bus runs right over my chest and breaks my heart just a little.

So, instead of waiting and following him around like a pathetic puppy, I will be his friend who is dating other people. The date was alright. He was kinda cute, tall, kinda funny, good body from what I could see. I'm not sure if its just because my feelings are so strong for someone else but I didn't really feel any romantic feelings. I will definitely go out with him again if he asks though. Its not often a genuinely nice guy comes around. Never know what can become. Plus, he knew up front my hair is short and natural. Accepting that is a definite plus.

I'm laying here now with my plastic bags and knitted cap on my oiled head. I feel silly but forgetting about patience, I want my long hair back! Lol. Its getting there. Hopefully I'll see some inches in another couple of months. I'm thinking for my 1yr no relaxer anniversary I'm going to flat iron my hair. I do like my nappy hair, but I do kinda miss my "blow in the wind type hair" as a classmate of mine once called it.

Well, bedtime. I'm tired and got stuff to do in the morning.

I have an idea (in a sing-song voice)

Ok, the other day I was in the CurkyNikki.com hair forum (DanielleToday) and I was inquiring if anyone was doing the curly girl and the ghe at the same time. In all this time of doing the ghe, I haven't noticed any significant amount of growth. One respondent informed me I'm supposed to use oil with the ghe method (although, I strongly believe its optional).

Anyway, that's when I had the brilliant idea to do a hot oil treatment everyday. Excessive? Maybe so. I'm going to commit to this for one week to see my results. Its basically what the ghe method is apparently. Putting oils on your hair and scalp then covering with a great amount heat. I really am too lazy to remember to baggy my hair every night, so I'll use the hooded dryer during the day to compensate for my laziness.

Right now I'm sitting here with the queen helene cholesterol hot oil, olive and grapeseed oils in my hair. I am getting itchy around my hairline. Not sure shy I put it on so early (12:30.... yea). I have to work 3rd shift tonite so I wasn't thinking I guess. I'm still not entirely sure what cholesterol does for hair, despite my research. I'm nervous my hair is gonna turn out crunchy again. Although, the original crunch was due to the creme of nature conditioning treatment (never again!!).

I'm actually on day 2 of this hot oil challenge. Week 4 day something with the curly girl method. Hopefully this will give some great results.

CG wk 3, day something.

My mom came up to me a couple of days ago and started playing around in my hair, then she says "ooh, its like super tight coils".. I almost wanted to say duh, but not too long ago I didn't have.a clue what my natural hair was like either.. she then asked me why I don't get those twists in it, which I responded with "because I don't have twists money, nor do I have the patience to do it myself". My main concern now is growth, not style. 4inches is not enough for someone as lazy as I am to worry about styling lol.

Just by looking, I can't tell a great difference in definition, not to say there isn't one, but I can definitely feel where my coils and naps are more clumped and sturdy.. yea, that sounds like a good adjective

In other news, today/yesterday was.christmas. yea, it kinda sucked. Not much to say really, then I went to work. Just getting home now. Too tired to enjoy a self pity party, but feel I should chug down a few celebratory shots since I'm childless for the night.. grr.

Back to hair for a moment, I have been slacking on the GHE. I don't use oils or anything since I cowash my hair practically everyday. I think that's the classic way of doing the GHE. There are a lot of modified ways to do everything.

I guess that's enough for now. I'm tired.

Curly girl: week 2 day 2

Can I just mention really quick, my hair has so many fewer knots, its ridiculous. I know that didn't make much sense, but I haven't had to comb my hair in a week.. ok, to be fair I never really combed my hair before, but even finger combing/detangling is so quick. I basically just detangle as I'm cowashing.. granted, my hair is still significantly short.

I'm not sure but I think my hair is also more elastic.. but it does feel like there's a film on it. That could be from the olive oil spray I made.

Curly girl/GHE: week 2 day 1

I know I'm all over the place with this one.

My first week doing the curly girl has been ok. I stopped using the tresseeme split remedy and actually, I've stopped using anything in my hair outside of conditioner and a little oil. I have definitely noticed my hair is beginning to feel softer and moisturized longer. I can't tell if its doing anything for curl definition, but I suppose that'll come later. I just want to say though, I don't expect it to fo much for my afro and scab hairs. I just don't believe there is any way to permanently change your curl pattern without force of tools and chemicals. If that's your goal, then you're going to be disappointed. You can't make define curls that don't exist.

I've also been baggying my hair every night to help promote growth, moisture and length retention. Some people complain about a smell, but I haven't noticed. I'm trying to avoid baggying up my hair too moist because I don't want my scalp getting all soggy from being wet all the time. While I want my hair to be moisturized, its important to let your hair and scalp dry. Imagine when you're in the tub too long, how pruny your fingers get. now imagine your scalp doing the same. You probably also don't want the salt deposits from sweat sitting on your head too long. that isn't scientific, that's just me. I'm not concerned really with the.salt because I find myself cowashing practically everyday. Hopefully in another week or two I'll start to notice a difference with both techniques.

Ive been combating that by focusing more on the growth aspect. Last night I baggied my head up without water, but I did massage a tiny bit of oil in my scalp.

A new transitioning phase

I've been evaluating my hair a lot lately.. I went from not caring to suddenly being obsessed all over again..

After some research, I decided to give the curly girl method a try. I'm not doing it hardcore right now. I'm simply "transitioning" into it by slowly eliminating cones from my products. I'm not tossing that big bottle of tresemme yet!

What I am doing is using it as my prewash prior to using a light amount of shampoo. I mean, no doubt the split remedy has greatly improved my level of breakage. I have virtually none right now.

Gel isn't helping my hair, the leave in (infusium, which contains dimethicone) definitely wasn't helping, so obviously I need to try something new. Its been 2 or 3 days and everyday I adjust it. last night I used the vo5 moisture milks as a leave in. I added it to my spray bottle as well. I dried my hair with my tshirt, then baggied it up for the night.

The frizz is still there but I'm not doing it full force. My curly buts do seem more apparent, but I dunno about moisturized. I still have to implement the weekly conditioning treatment. I bought the yogurt last night and will go back to my yogurt honey and egg treatment. My hair was much softer then. Granted, it is winter now, but no excuse! My hair should be soft and soupple at all times! Lol, jk

TRESemme professionals split remedy: day 2

Ok, my initial reaction, not so.good, but I'm gonna say, using it for the second time its not so bad.

My hair didn't feel as brittle with it on there. After I rinsed, it wasn't necessarily soft but compared to that first day its much better.

Right now I'm doing the baggying thing again. I haven't done it for a couple of months, excluding the past couple days of the deep conditioning and hot oil treatment. I don't have anything on my head; no product, no oils, nothing. I dried out most of the water, wrapped my head in two plastic bags, then added a tshirt for extra. I want to create the humid environment for growth, but also want my hair to absorb water. ok, that last part is a lie. I just want the humidity to promote growth lol. I'm just sick of short hair.

Yes, there is technically nothing I can do to make my hair grow faster. That doesn't mean I wont try dammit!

Anyway, yea. I think I'll stick with the tresemme a little longer to see how it fairs. I don't plan on washing my hair everyday, I just wanted to wash that gel out before trying something new tomorrow.

Initial Review: TRESemme spilt remedy conditioner

Ok, I couldn't stand it any longer. I must say something about this tresemme conditioner...

Ok, good points: light, pleasant fragrance. Thick, sort of.. um, got it on sale for 2.99 at walgreens.

Ok, now for the bad: it had mo slip at all. My hair kept knotting up the whole time. I rinsed and my hair felt worse than after I rinsed out my vo5 which I used as my prepoo. Ugh. So I added a more generous amount, as the instructions stated. Left it in a bit longer, maybe 5 minutes. I thought maybe it could be working.. I rinsed, plopped, removed my tshirt and... crap. Well, hold on. My curls did look more defined but my hair felt very horrible. Matted, dry even though it was wet.. so, I proceeded to add the queen helene cholesterol hot oil treatment. I've used that product while relaxed and had great results. Anyway, not about that.

I will continue to use this, just in case it does help with my ends. It is NOT a good moisturizing conditioner or detangler, but it'll take a couple uses before I'll know if it helps strengthen my ends. I dunno about dry, but after rinsing my curls were more defined which is a plus. After one use, I'm not considering purchasing again, but I will give it a fair trial.

I really don't have very damaged ends, but preventing them is a key in length retention I think. If you're considering this product and go by hair types, my hair ranges from 3b to 4c, with about an inch of relaxed ends at the top.

I will be doing more reviews in the near future and might start doing some youtube videos soon as well.

Product Review: creme of nature argan oil intensive conditioning treatment

I haven't posted in a while. I kind of fell off the wagon of natural hair care and journey, but I'm semi back now. I've tried a couple of products since my last post but haven't found anything wow worthy yet.. now, when I say a couple I mean that literally. If you've read any of my past posts you know how I feel about all this hair junk stuff. I like reading reviews and i on and off watch youtube videos, but I just can't get with it all..

Anyway, so I bought this deep conditioning treatment by creme of nature. You know, the one in that eye grabbing red package. I've never tried anything in their line, but I thought I'd give it a whirl. I hadn't done a deep conditioning treatment in a while and thought I'd see what all the hubbub was about with the argan oil craze. I remember watching a youtube video by (can't remember her name, but she's pretty popular), and she seemed to like it..

Its crap. Plain and simple... it went on great, don't get me wrong. My hair was smooth and that slip affect that everyone talks about was great. Maybe my mistake was leaving it on overnight, which I've never done by the way, but I thought it just felt so wonderful on my hair. I rinsed it out the next morning... not impressed, at all. The organic olive oil whatever (you know which one I'm talking about) is sooooooooooooooooooooooooo..... much better. All day today my hair has been frizzy and not dry but it had a dry sensation.. I dunno if that made sense, but I can't describe it. I suppose it did make my hair a bit stronger, but that was completely overshadowed by the frizziness of my hair. I just looked like a girl that was overdue for a relaxer not someone who's natural.

Now, I did also change my leave in (usually garnier sleek and shine cream) to infusium 23 frizz controlller, so honestly it could be either one. I choose to believe it was the creme of nature because my hair didn't feel very good after I rinsed.

Yea, so definitely not repurchasing that. If you want to try it, then by all means. If hair type is important in your decision, I am low porous 3b thru 4c with about an inch of relaxed ends at the very top.

My search continues for a good, cheap deep conditioner. I'm tired of this twa business so I gotta get thru this phase as quickly and easily as possible. The olive oil pak is alright, I just wonder if there's something better. Right now I'm under the dryer with queen helene cholesterol hot oil so I'll review that tomorrow.

A quick peek at my next review: TRESemme split end repair conditioner.... Uh, no. I'll use it a couple more times before I fully decide. The infusium worked wonderfully in my son's, who's mixed, hair. His curls have been shiny, smooth and moisturized all day.

More naturals.

Ran into a newly natural girl at work the other night. She definitely embraced her natural hair better than me. What I mean is, she big chopped back in may, which is when I stopped getting relaxers. Her hair seems much longer than mine, but she had it clumped, which I wish my hair would do.

She described her hair as 4c which looked nothing like mine.. then again, I never really suspected my hair was 4c except sprinkled throughout my head.

She suggested I try ecostyler gel with olive oil.. so, I guess I can try it. I would like a good styling product. Her hair felt hard, possibly from the gel, which is definitely not what I want. I mixed the Shea butter curling souffle with a little Jam gel and it seemed to work alright. I put the garnier leave in cream in my hair first while still wet, then mixed the jam and jelly together in my hands and rubbed it thru my hair. I used my soft brisstle brush to help pop some curls out by running it thru my hair in circular motions. I'm not sure if it makes a difference, but she said she does that too.

She has a youtube page, but I forgot what she told me. When I find out, I'll post it. Very sweet girl. She has kind of a baby voice like me, so that made me feel more comfortable, like "wow, she's a lot like me"..... except tall and thin lol

Grapeseed oil

Wow... so, I got some grapeseed oil from krogers and wow. I used some on my skin after a shower and it spread on so smoothly. My skin is so moist. Greasy, yes, but that's normal and will go away in a couple minutes. a little bit goes a long way too. Learned that lesson haha

Deep conditioning my hair now. I mixed grapeseed oil, a touch of coconut oil, fenugreek, baking soda, and I mixed some vo5 tea therapy  and loreal evercreme conditioners (both sulfate free.. well, I don't remember seeing sulfates listed on the vo5 when I looked before and I'm too lazy to look again).

About to use a little grapeseed on my sons hair to see how it does. His hair seems to absorb anything and everything. For this reason I say he has good hair. To be able to use anything and everything in mine. To go from straight to curly with ease. Hair like his is waisted on men.

The Next Day:

Ok, so Micah's hair is a bit drier than usual, and so was mine.... hmm. I'm not going to completely dismiss the grapeseed oil from our hair quite yet. I will probably only use it on my scalp or do some more experimenting because my hair doesn't typically respond well to oils anyway. It did feel super soft after I rinsed the deep conditioner from my hair.

Sour cream

I've decided to switch from yogurt to sour cream. I use it more in my cooking, so I don't feel like I'm wasting it if I don't use it in my hair. Its basically the same as yogurt, but much thicker (and tastes better, haha).

For my hair mask, I mixed a few dallops of sour cream, 5 capsules of fenugreek, coconut oil, and honey. Normally, I add an egg to my treatments, but I'm low on money right now. I prepooed with Dove daily conditioner, rinsed then rubbed baking soda and lemon juice with a little water over my hair then let it sit for a few minutes while in the shower. I rinsed my hair for just a few seconds, then pat my hair dry.

Next, spread on the hair mask. It should be good and thick. I covered my head with a kroger bag, a target bag, and a towel. I let it sit for a couple of hours. I dunno the exact time frame. I thought about sitting under a heated dryer, but thought that might not be a good idea, you know .with the dairy sitting on my head lol.

Im actually still sitting here with the mix on my head. I'm gonna rinse, then wash with my loreal conditioner or one of my vo5 conditioners; possibly tea therapy. After that, I'll pour some black tea over my hair; I haven't done a tea rinse in a while.. its actually chai black tea. I bought a new brand and its disgusting. I was using green tea and lemon genseng, but I need a better use for this nasty chai I got.

Anyway, that's what I'm doing right now. I'm starting to notice a little growth. Its not significant, but its there. Hopefully within the next month or two there will be a greater difference as I reach my three month mark from my big chop. Probably be better if I tried harder to take care of it. I'm starting to notice knots in my hair but I'm too lazy to comb it. Doing the finger comb thing while I'm washing it, or during the day but apparently I've been missing some spots..

also, gonna try mixing my garnier leave it with the Shea moisture jelly stuff. Hopefully that will produce good results. The scurl really only seems to be working as a second day product, like after my hair has already fully dried, as a way to revamp my fro

Alright, better get moving. Supposed to be giving a massage today.

Documented week 1

Day 1:

I have figured out why my edges were burning the other night: baking soda. I used some tonite and I guess I didn't rinse it all out along the sides.  Its not as soft as before, but it really defines my coils, curls, naps, whatever you wanna call it.

Day 2:

My hair wasn't very soft this morning, but Micah's wasn't either so I think its just the weather thing. I'm experimenting with pomade. I used my garnier leave in conditioner since it makes me hair feel soft then some coconut oil over the top. After it dried a little I swished some pomade thru it. I still need something to moisturize my hair. Water just doesn't seem like enough at the moment. I need more jojoba oil. I think adding that to the coconut oil will help with sealing in the water

Day 3:

Today, I haven't done anything to my hair. I was at a party last night so I was too tired to do much of anything. Plus, I had so much laundry to do. I don't really know what the pomade did for my hair, if anything. So, that experiment went no where I guess..

Day 4:

I decided not to wrap my hair last night. I noticed my hair is shorter around the back and sides where my scarf sits. I have a satin pillowcase, so I'll see if sleeping on that alone will do anything. I think I'll do a deep conditioning treatment today. I need to wash out the pomade and stuff. I've got a package of dr miracle under the sink.

I dunno if I'll completely give up on the pomade, but its probably something to save for when my hair gets longer.. on that note, as my hair does get longer, my kinks, coils, curls, naps, whatever you wanna call them, are becoming more apparent. Wish I could figure out how to define them. I'd like to sport a less fuzzy fro look, and more of a coily curly look. Youtube and google hasn't turned up much help....

Bought the organics replenishing pak deep conditioner instead and a surprise purchase, Luster's S Curl Activator Mousturizer.. I went looking for a curl definer, but saw the word "mousturizer". It wasnt even 3 dollars. I thought about getting the care free curls (the yellow bottle). I sprayed a little on my hair before I washed it, and my hair did feel soft and noisturized..

Day 5

I made another purchase: Shea moisture curling souffle which i will do a full review on later. It seems like something I will hold on to. Glad I didn't look at the reviews for it beforehand. I had to play around with it, but I think this stuff is going to help while I'm in this short hair phase. I didn't wash my hair, just wet it, then sprayed in the scurl before wrapping my hair in a tshirt. After that I added a very small amount of the Shea moisture at a time and swished it thru my hair. Still need to make some adjustments to the process.

Day 6

So, this morning I woke up and my hair feels strange. Not in a bad way though. It feels greasy, but its not greasy. My hair actually looks darker with a sheen instead of the usual light brown and dull. The wavy, loose curls on the top of my head actually have some form. I can't see the back of my hair, but I'm sure its still fuzzy. The fuzzy I don't mind as long as my curly parts aren't all frizzy. I like it. Its got kind of a wet and wavy look. Wish my phone took better pictures. I don't feel like my hair needs anymore product. Just rubbed a little water on it and its good.

Day 7:

I didn't have to wash my hair, which was cool. I rubbed some coconut and olive oils on my scald, rubbed some scurl thru my hair then sealed with the Shea moisture curling souffle and the africas best olive miracle cream.. not bad. I will say, my hair feels like it has a bit of build up, but its definitely not as dry and dull. Probably going to use less of the curling souffle during the week and just add scurl and a little cream

I had to wash my hair. I wasn't feeling to producty feel on my hair. Well, all I did was soak it in conditioner, put a plastic bag over it while I ate dinner, then rinsed in the shower. I rubbed my oils on my scalp, letter it dry some; massages in A LOT of scurl lol, let it dry some; then rubbed thru the curling jelly and cream together in my hands then thru my hair. Going to sleep without the scarf.

Still bitchin'...

So, I'm doing the hair baggying thing again tonite.. it doesn't itch as bad around my hairline, but I shampooed my hair earlier. No, it wasn't sulfate free.

I'm starting to get irritated with this process. Why did I cut my hair off?? Why did I get that relaxer back in march?? Nothing I can do about it now.

I'm quickly realizing, I don't have the patience to grow hair. When I say this, I'm moreso referring to those hair growth challenges, like the unofficial one I am on.. for one, they make me watch for growth more anally, and two, it has the whole boiling pot of water theme.. I wish I could stop caring about the length of my hair. If I watched it less, it would grow faster lol. I need to be enjoying the fact that I can wash and style my hair in a matter of minutes and I'm not in the mirror constantly trying to fix my hair....

This first month after my big chop has been so difficult and long winded. I thought school would make it seem. quicker, but not really. I dunno why I'm trying to rush myself into detangling sessions, styling, and all that mess.. judging by how nappy it is (yes, I used that forbidden word), I'm gonna have a whole heap of trouble. These slinkies are so tight you really can't tell. Like a slinkie sitting up, fresh from the box and undisturbed.

I do want to add very quickly, that.coconut oil is my best friend. I can go from pan to hair to body with this stuff, its great. It seals, penetrates, moisturizes, refreshes. Its great. I'm probably going to try some different essential oils soon, particularly rosemary and peppermint (you can guess why).

I mostly just wanted to vent about my hair. Starting next month, I'll probably post my daily hair routine in a week-by-week format.

Incomplete night time routine

Ok, doing the baggy green house effect thing again tonite. My head is itching around the edges.. not sure if I.should take that as a sign. If I wake up bald around my entire hairline, we know it was a sign lol.

I will say that my hair seems to have grown. I used baking soda yesterday mixed with water and a teeny, tiny bit of conditioner before shampooing with my loreal. I also used fenugreek, sour cream, and squash (baby food) as part of my deep conditioner. Anyway, my "curls" certainly feel more defined. I dunno how they look. I suppose I should start taking pictures. Hehe. Feels softer too; possibly the fenugreek or moisturizing while my hair is still soaked... or a bit of both.

I've been finger measuring, since I can't work a tape measure up there. Its reaching up to the fist knuckle of my index finger, if that makes sense lol. I'll do an "official" length check in november, after a month has passed. Although, it won't really be official til december since I never took a before picture lol. Its the b12 deficiency. It makes me a little slower than the rest lol.

I'm gonna close with: I'm so glad I checked my sons diaper; there was poop..

Goodnite!

Laying here with freakin 50 layers on my head for this baggying jazz... ok, I have 2 bags, a scarf, and a tshirt. That's still a lot.

My head feels heavy. I just know this better work. I feel sort of ridiculous at this point, sleeping with walmart bags on,my head... next month I'll add rosemary and peppermint oil. I may as well go all out lol.
