Relaxed hair doesn't determine state of natural hair

 Here's a cool YouTube video

More naturals.

Ran into a newly natural girl at work the other night. She definitely embraced her natural hair better than me. What I mean is, she big chopped back in may, which is when I stopped getting relaxers. Her hair seems much longer than mine, but she had it clumped, which I wish my hair would do.

She described her hair as 4c which looked nothing like mine.. then again, I never really suspected my hair was 4c except sprinkled throughout my head.

She suggested I try ecostyler gel with olive oil.. so, I guess I can try it. I would like a good styling product. Her hair felt hard, possibly from the gel, which is definitely not what I want. I mixed the Shea butter curling souffle with a little Jam gel and it seemed to work alright. I put the garnier leave in cream in my hair first while still wet, then mixed the jam and jelly together in my hands and rubbed it thru my hair. I used my soft brisstle brush to help pop some curls out by running it thru my hair in circular motions. I'm not sure if it makes a difference, but she said she does that too.

She has a youtube page, but I forgot what she told me. When I find out, I'll post it. Very sweet girl. She has kind of a baby voice like me, so that made me feel more comfortable, like "wow, she's a lot like me"..... except tall and thin lol

Grapeseed oil

Wow... so, I got some grapeseed oil from krogers and wow. I used some on my skin after a shower and it spread on so smoothly. My skin is so moist. Greasy, yes, but that's normal and will go away in a couple minutes. a little bit goes a long way too. Learned that lesson haha

Deep conditioning my hair now. I mixed grapeseed oil, a touch of coconut oil, fenugreek, baking soda, and I mixed some vo5 tea therapy  and loreal evercreme conditioners (both sulfate free.. well, I don't remember seeing sulfates listed on the vo5 when I looked before and I'm too lazy to look again).

About to use a little grapeseed on my sons hair to see how it does. His hair seems to absorb anything and everything. For this reason I say he has good hair. To be able to use anything and everything in mine. To go from straight to curly with ease. Hair like his is waisted on men.

The Next Day:

Ok, so Micah's hair is a bit drier than usual, and so was mine.... hmm. I'm not going to completely dismiss the grapeseed oil from our hair quite yet. I will probably only use it on my scalp or do some more experimenting because my hair doesn't typically respond well to oils anyway. It did feel super soft after I rinsed the deep conditioner from my hair.

Sour cream

I've decided to switch from yogurt to sour cream. I use it more in my cooking, so I don't feel like I'm wasting it if I don't use it in my hair. Its basically the same as yogurt, but much thicker (and tastes better, haha).

For my hair mask, I mixed a few dallops of sour cream, 5 capsules of fenugreek, coconut oil, and honey. Normally, I add an egg to my treatments, but I'm low on money right now. I prepooed with Dove daily conditioner, rinsed then rubbed baking soda and lemon juice with a little water over my hair then let it sit for a few minutes while in the shower. I rinsed my hair for just a few seconds, then pat my hair dry.

Next, spread on the hair mask. It should be good and thick. I covered my head with a kroger bag, a target bag, and a towel. I let it sit for a couple of hours. I dunno the exact time frame. I thought about sitting under a heated dryer, but thought that might not be a good idea, you know .with the dairy sitting on my head lol.

Im actually still sitting here with the mix on my head. I'm gonna rinse, then wash with my loreal conditioner or one of my vo5 conditioners; possibly tea therapy. After that, I'll pour some black tea over my hair; I haven't done a tea rinse in a while.. its actually chai black tea. I bought a new brand and its disgusting. I was using green tea and lemon genseng, but I need a better use for this nasty chai I got.

Anyway, that's what I'm doing right now. I'm starting to notice a little growth. Its not significant, but its there. Hopefully within the next month or two there will be a greater difference as I reach my three month mark from my big chop. Probably be better if I tried harder to take care of it. I'm starting to notice knots in my hair but I'm too lazy to comb it. Doing the finger comb thing while I'm washing it, or during the day but apparently I've been missing some spots..

also, gonna try mixing my garnier leave it with the Shea moisture jelly stuff. Hopefully that will produce good results. The scurl really only seems to be working as a second day product, like after my hair has already fully dried, as a way to revamp my fro

Alright, better get moving. Supposed to be giving a massage today.

One month.

So, its been a month since my big chop. I've learned nothing and feel nothing.

My hair isn't nearly as hard as it was, which is good. I haven't been deep conditioning like I should, but being broke kinda takes from that.

For one week I documented my journey with my hair.. yea, that didn't last long. I know that I'm not doing anything the same because I just play it by ear from day to day. And actually, I can't te but I think I'm having some breakage. I dunno. Its too early to tell.

Now that I'm working again, I should be able to care for my hair better: eating better, drinking more water, applying proper ingredients.

I started doing pilates again, so hopefully I can keep that up and reap some benefit before I lose all motivation and energy

Work.

I'm very desperate for money. I just started a new job about a week ago. I make 2clams more than my last job. Today, I agreed to work third shift (11-7). I hate working thirds. I'm tired, I woke up about 2 1/2 hours early, and I have class at 830 tomorrow. Ugh....

I'm happy to have another new job. I have bills so far up my ass I'm pulling them from my ears; I just hate being in a situation like this. What choice did I have? This morning, my child was crying for juice and I didn't have anything for us to eat..

I know, once I get that second paycheck, it'll be worth killing myself for. I say second because the first one is a catch up check. I won't actually be able to start enjoying money again until atleast the third check, but by the second, I'll start feeling the relief of cutting down my debts.

I'm hoping I can fall back to sleep for atleast another hour.. I won't be able to sleep again until 11am tomorrow. *sigh*

My jeans don't fit..

Unlike most people, I don't run out and buy more jeans. Not only am I too poor, but I refuse to be fat. I'm big enough as it is. I don't want to be a bbw or "big boned". So, why don't I just exercise? Cause I'm lazy! Simple as that.

I could have gotten up and worked out an hour ago, but instead I'm in the bed posting a blog.. I'm definitely getting up though and going to do some pilates. It only takes two weeks to notice a difference so if I'd started two weeks ago, I'd be fine right now. Self sabotage.

Here I go, refusing to be fat.

Documented week 1

Day 1:

I have figured out why my edges were burning the other night: baking soda. I used some tonite and I guess I didn't rinse it all out along the sides.  Its not as soft as before, but it really defines my coils, curls, naps, whatever you wanna call it.

Day 2:

My hair wasn't very soft this morning, but Micah's wasn't either so I think its just the weather thing. I'm experimenting with pomade. I used my garnier leave in conditioner since it makes me hair feel soft then some coconut oil over the top. After it dried a little I swished some pomade thru it. I still need something to moisturize my hair. Water just doesn't seem like enough at the moment. I need more jojoba oil. I think adding that to the coconut oil will help with sealing in the water

Day 3:

Today, I haven't done anything to my hair. I was at a party last night so I was too tired to do much of anything. Plus, I had so much laundry to do. I don't really know what the pomade did for my hair, if anything. So, that experiment went no where I guess..

Day 4:

I decided not to wrap my hair last night. I noticed my hair is shorter around the back and sides where my scarf sits. I have a satin pillowcase, so I'll see if sleeping on that alone will do anything. I think I'll do a deep conditioning treatment today. I need to wash out the pomade and stuff. I've got a package of dr miracle under the sink.

I dunno if I'll completely give up on the pomade, but its probably something to save for when my hair gets longer.. on that note, as my hair does get longer, my kinks, coils, curls, naps, whatever you wanna call them, are becoming more apparent. Wish I could figure out how to define them. I'd like to sport a less fuzzy fro look, and more of a coily curly look. Youtube and google hasn't turned up much help....

Bought the organics replenishing pak deep conditioner instead and a surprise purchase, Luster's S Curl Activator Mousturizer.. I went looking for a curl definer, but saw the word "mousturizer". It wasnt even 3 dollars. I thought about getting the care free curls (the yellow bottle). I sprayed a little on my hair before I washed it, and my hair did feel soft and noisturized..

Day 5

I made another purchase: Shea moisture curling souffle which i will do a full review on later. It seems like something I will hold on to. Glad I didn't look at the reviews for it beforehand. I had to play around with it, but I think this stuff is going to help while I'm in this short hair phase. I didn't wash my hair, just wet it, then sprayed in the scurl before wrapping my hair in a tshirt. After that I added a very small amount of the Shea moisture at a time and swished it thru my hair. Still need to make some adjustments to the process.

Day 6

So, this morning I woke up and my hair feels strange. Not in a bad way though. It feels greasy, but its not greasy. My hair actually looks darker with a sheen instead of the usual light brown and dull. The wavy, loose curls on the top of my head actually have some form. I can't see the back of my hair, but I'm sure its still fuzzy. The fuzzy I don't mind as long as my curly parts aren't all frizzy. I like it. Its got kind of a wet and wavy look. Wish my phone took better pictures. I don't feel like my hair needs anymore product. Just rubbed a little water on it and its good.

Day 7:

I didn't have to wash my hair, which was cool. I rubbed some coconut and olive oils on my scald, rubbed some scurl thru my hair then sealed with the Shea moisture curling souffle and the africas best olive miracle cream.. not bad. I will say, my hair feels like it has a bit of build up, but its definitely not as dry and dull. Probably going to use less of the curling souffle during the week and just add scurl and a little cream

I had to wash my hair. I wasn't feeling to producty feel on my hair. Well, all I did was soak it in conditioner, put a plastic bag over it while I ate dinner, then rinsed in the shower. I rubbed my oils on my scalp, letter it dry some; massages in A LOT of scurl lol, let it dry some; then rubbed thru the curling jelly and cream together in my hands then thru my hair. Going to sleep without the scarf.

Still bitchin'...

So, I'm doing the hair baggying thing again tonite.. it doesn't itch as bad around my hairline, but I shampooed my hair earlier. No, it wasn't sulfate free.

I'm starting to get irritated with this process. Why did I cut my hair off?? Why did I get that relaxer back in march?? Nothing I can do about it now.

I'm quickly realizing, I don't have the patience to grow hair. When I say this, I'm moreso referring to those hair growth challenges, like the unofficial one I am on.. for one, they make me watch for growth more anally, and two, it has the whole boiling pot of water theme.. I wish I could stop caring about the length of my hair. If I watched it less, it would grow faster lol. I need to be enjoying the fact that I can wash and style my hair in a matter of minutes and I'm not in the mirror constantly trying to fix my hair....

This first month after my big chop has been so difficult and long winded. I thought school would make it seem. quicker, but not really. I dunno why I'm trying to rush myself into detangling sessions, styling, and all that mess.. judging by how nappy it is (yes, I used that forbidden word), I'm gonna have a whole heap of trouble. These slinkies are so tight you really can't tell. Like a slinkie sitting up, fresh from the box and undisturbed.

I do want to add very quickly, that.coconut oil is my best friend. I can go from pan to hair to body with this stuff, its great. It seals, penetrates, moisturizes, refreshes. Its great. I'm probably going to try some different essential oils soon, particularly rosemary and peppermint (you can guess why).

I mostly just wanted to vent about my hair. Starting next month, I'll probably post my daily hair routine in a week-by-week format.
